Frequently Asked Questions

Is this golf handicap calculator free?

Yes, completely free with no signup required. For an official handicap, register with your national golf association.

How is a golf handicap calculated?

Under the World Handicap System, a Handicap Index is the average of the best 8 Score Differentials from your most recent 20 rounds × 0.96. Score Differential = (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating) × 113 / Slope Rating.

What is course rating and slope rating?

Course Rating is the expected score for a scratch golfer (usually close to par, e.g., 72.1). Slope Rating measures the difficulty for a bogey golfer relative to a scratch golfer (113 is average). Both values are on the scorecard or course website.

How many rounds do I need for a handicap?

Under WHS, you need a minimum of 3 scores to establish a handicap. With 3–4 scores, only the lowest 1 Score Differential is used. With 5–6 scores, the lowest 2 are averaged. The full 8-of-20 formula kicks in at 20 rounds.

What is a good golf handicap?

A handicap of 0 (scratch) or below means you typically shoot par. Single digits (1–9) is considered very good. Most recreational golfers have handicaps of 15–25. The maximum under WHS is 54 for men and women.
