Which Woodworking Calculator Do You Need?
Woodworking projects require accurate numbers at every stage — from buying the right amount of lumber to cutting precise angles and predicting how wood will move seasonally. These calculators cover the full project lifecycle from material planning through joinery, structural analysis, and finishing.
Planning Materials and Lumber?
Lumber is sold in board feet, but most projects are planned in square feet or linear feet. The Board Foot Calculator converts your lumber dimensions (thickness × width × length) to board feet and calculates the total cost at a given price per board foot — so you know your lumber budget before walking into the hardwood dealer. For projects with multiple parts, the Cutting List Optimizer arranges your cut list on standard lumber dimensions to minimize waste — a key step on any project where material cost matters.
Joinery, Angles, and Structural Calculations?
Compound angles are one of the most difficult calculations in woodworking. The Miter Angle Calculator solves for both the miter and bevel settings on a saw for any polygon, including angled cases like tapered legs and crown molding. Dovetail joints require precise pin spacing and angle calculations. The Dovetail Calculator lays out evenly spaced pins and tails for a given board width, with the option to adjust the ratio angle for different wood species and aesthetics.
Box joints (finger joints) are an alternative to dovetails for box construction. The Box Joint Calculator divides a board width into evenly spaced fingers given a target finger width — useful when you want to match the joint width to a router bit or dado set size. Shelf sag is a structural concern for horizontal spans. The Shelf Sag Calculator estimates midpoint deflection for a shelf of given width, thickness, and load based on material stiffness (modulus of elasticity) — showing when you need a thicker shelf, a different species, or center support.
Wood Movement and Finishing?
Solid wood moves with humidity changes throughout the year. Failing to account for wood movement in panel and tabletop designs leads to cracking, buckling, and glue joint failure. The Wood Movement Calculator estimates dimensional change per inch of width based on species, cut (flat vs. quarter sawn), and seasonal moisture content change for your region. Understanding this before cutting a panel to size prevents expensive rework.
Glue joint strength depends on glue coverage and clamping time. The Wood Glue Calculator estimates glue volume needed for a given joint area and calculates spread rate — useful for avoiding both glue starvation and excessive squeeze-out. For finish planning, the Wood Finish Calculator estimates finish quantity (oil, varnish, stain) based on total surface area and number of coats, with coverage rates by finish type so you know exactly how much to buy.
Why Accurate Woodworking Math Matters
Small errors in woodworking compound. A miter angle that's off by half a degree creates a visible gap on an octagonal frame. A board foot calculation that misses a factor of 1.2 for waste leaves you short on material mid-project. A shelf calculation that assumes pine stiffness when the material is walnut underestimates deflection. The calculators here are designed to give you the accurate numbers that prevent these problems before they happen.
The Board Foot Calculator handles multiple boards simultaneously, which is important because hardwood dealers price by the board foot for actual dimensions — a 4/4 (1 inch nominal) board of 6/4 (1.5 inch actual) thickness changes the calculation. The Cutting List Optimizer goes further by arranging your parts list on standard lumber to show how to minimize waste and how many full boards to purchase.
For joinery choices, understanding the trade-offs between dovetails, box joints, and other methods comes down to tool availability, skill level, and aesthetic preference. The Dovetail Calculator and Box Joint Calculator let you preview different layouts before cutting — adjusting ratios and finger widths until you find a layout that works for your board dimensions and tooling. All calculations run in your browser with no account required.

How do I calculate board feet for a lumber purchase?
Board feet = (thickness in inches × width in inches × length in inches) ÷ 144. For example, a 1" thick × 6" wide × 96" long board is (1 × 6 × 96) ÷ 144 = 4 board feet. The board foot calculator handles this with multiple boards at once and gives a total cost at your price per board foot.
How much will wood move seasonally in my project?
Wood movement depends on species, grain orientation, and local humidity range. Flat-sawn lumber moves roughly twice as much as quartersawn lumber. Use the wood movement calculator to enter your species, cut, and seasonal moisture change — it outputs the dimensional change per inch of width so you can size expansion gaps accordingly.
What dovetail angle should I use?
A 1:8 ratio (about 7 degrees) is standard for softwoods, and 1:6 (about 9.5 degrees) is common for hardwoods. Steeper angles in softwood risk shearing the tails under stress; shallower angles in hardwood look elegant but can be harder to cut cleanly. The dovetail calculator lets you adjust the ratio and preview the layout.
How do I know if my shelf needs support in the middle?
Use the shelf sag calculator — enter your shelf material (pine, plywood, oak), thickness, span, and expected load. If the calculated midpoint deflection exceeds L/360 (where L is the span), you need either a thicker shelf, a stiffer material, a center support, or a shorter span.
