How to Use the Random Task Picker
Decision fatigue is real. When you have 20 things to do, choosing which one to tackle first can waste more time than the task itself. The random task picker eliminates that friction — paste in your list, click one button, and immediately get to work on whatever it chooses.
Step 1: Enter Your Tasks
Type or paste your tasks into the input area, one per line. You can also click "Import" to load tasks from a .txt or .csv file. No special formatting needed — just write each task as you normally would. Your task list is saved automatically to your browser, so it persists when you return.
Step 2: Set Priority Weights (Optional)
To give important tasks a higher chance of being selected, add a priority number in brackets at the end of the line — for example: "Write project report [5]". Enable the "Use priority weighting" checkbox, and tasks with [5] will be five times more likely to be chosen than tasks with [1]. Tasks without a bracket get a default priority of 1.
Step 3: Pick and Focus
Click "Pick a Task!" and the spotlight animation rapidly cycles through your tasks before landing on the selected one. Once picked, start the built-in 25-minute Pomodoro timer to dedicate focused time to that task. When the timer ends, you can either mark the task Done or pick again if you need more time.
Step 4: Use Daily Picks for Planning
The "3 Daily Picks" button selects three tasks weighted by priority — a quick way to turn a sprawling list into today's concrete focus. This works especially well for morning planning sessions or when you're returning to work after a break and need a clear starting point.
Filter by Category
Use the category filter buttons to limit picks to Work, Personal, Errands, or Creative tasks. Tag your tasks with a category by including the word in the task text — for example "Call dentist (errands)" — and the category filter will recognize and include it.
FAQ
Is the random task picker free?
Yes, completely free with no signup required. Your task lists are saved locally in your browser.
Is my data safe?
Yes, all tasks are stored in localStorage on your device only. Nothing is sent to any server.
How does priority weighting work?
Each task can be assigned a priority from 1-5. Higher priority tasks have a proportionally higher chance of being selected. A priority-5 task is 5x more likely to be picked than a priority-1 task.
What is the Pomodoro timer for?
After a task is picked, you can start a 25-minute Pomodoro timer dedicated to that task. It counts down and alerts you when time is up — a proven focus technique to make steady progress on tasks.
What is 'Daily Picks' mode?
Daily Picks selects 3 tasks for your focus today, weighted by priority. It's a quick way to turn a long task list into a manageable today's agenda.
Can I import tasks from a text or CSV file?
Yes! Paste tasks directly into the input area (one per line) or use the Import button to load from a .txt or .csv file. The tool reads the first column of CSV files.
What happens when I mark a task as done?
Clicking 'Done' removes the task from your active list immediately. The pick history still records it so you can see what was completed this session.
