0 combatantsHow to Use the TTRPG Initiative Tracker
Managing combat in D&D and other tabletop RPGs requires tracking who goes when, how much HP everyone has, and which conditions are affecting combatants. This initiative tracker handles all of that in a clean, mobile-friendly interface — no paper required.
Step 1: Add Combatants
Enter each combatant's name, their initiative roll result, and optionally their HP and AC. Select whether they are a Player Character (PC) or Monster — this color-codes them in the list for quick visual reference. Click "Add to Initiative" and they appear in the sorted order list. The initiative list automatically re-sorts from highest to lowest initiative each time you add someone.
Step 2: Advance Turns
Click "Next" to highlight the next combatant in the order. The active combatant is clearly marked with a border. When the order wraps from the last combatant back to the first, the round counter automatically increments. Use "Prev" to go back if you skipped someone or made a mistake.
Step 3: Track Hit Points
Click the HP number on any combatant row to open the HP panel. Enter an amount and click Damage to reduce HP or Heal to increase it. The HP bar changes color as health decreases — green at full health, yellow at half, red at critical. Combatants at 0 HP are marked as unconscious. You can still track conditions on downed combatants.
Step 4: Toggle Conditions
Each combatant row has an expandable conditions panel. Click any condition name to toggle it active (shown in red). Active conditions are always visible in the combatant row so the DM does not forget who is poisoned, stunned, or prone. Standard D&D 5e conditions are all included: Blinded, Charmed, Deafened, Frightened, Grappled, Incapacitated, Invisible, Paralyzed, Petrified, Poisoned, Prone, Restrained, Stunned, and Unconscious.
Step 5: Start a New Encounter
Click "New Encounter" to clear all combatants and reset the round counter. Your session data is stored in sessionStorage, so if you accidentally refresh the page mid-combat, everything will still be there. Closing the browser tab permanently clears the encounter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this initiative tracker free?
Yes, completely free with no account or signup required. Everything runs in your browser — add characters, track HP, and manage combat rounds without any registration.
Is my encounter data saved anywhere?
Your encounter is stored in sessionStorage, so it persists if you accidentally refresh the page. Closing the tab or browser clears everything. Nothing is sent to any server.
What conditions can I track?
The tracker supports all standard D&D 5e conditions: Blinded, Charmed, Deafened, Frightened, Grappled, Incapacitated, Invisible, Paralyzed, Petrified, Poisoned, Prone, Restrained, Stunned, and Unconscious. Toggle them on or off per combatant with a single click.
How does the initiative order work?
Combatants are sorted in descending order by their initiative roll — highest goes first. Ties are broken by the order added. Click Next Turn to advance through the list, with automatic round counting when the order cycles back to the top.
Can I track both players and monsters?
Yes. Add both player characters and monsters to the same initiative list. Each entry can have a name, initiative roll, HP, and AC. Use the color indicators — blue for PCs, red for monsters — to tell them apart at a glance.
How do I deal damage or heal a character?
Click the HP number on any combatant to open the damage/heal panel. Enter a number and click Damage to reduce HP or Heal to increase it. HP is tracked per combatant and shown in the initiative list with a color bar showing remaining health.
Can I use this on my phone at the table?
Yes. The tracker is mobile-responsive and works in any browser without installation. Add it to your home screen for a near-native app experience during sessions.
How do I start a new encounter?
Click the 'New Encounter' button to clear all combatants and reset the round counter. This does not ask for confirmation, so make sure you are done with the current encounter before resetting.
