How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF
Page numbers are essential for long documents, reports, and assembled PDFs. This tool adds them directly in your browser with an interactive canvas preview — so you see exactly where the number will appear before downloading.
Step 1: Upload Your PDF
Click "Choose File" or drag a PDF onto the upload area. The tool uses PDF.js to render the first page on a canvas so you can preview the page number placement in real time. No data is sent to any server.
Step 2: Choose a Position
Click any button in the 3×3 position grid to pick where the page number goes: top-left, top-center, top-right, middle-left, middle-center, middle-right, bottom-left, bottom-center, or bottom-right. The canvas preview updates instantly to show the number at the selected position. Bottom-center is the most common placement for professional documents.
Step 3: Configure the Format
Choose from five number formats: plain numbers (1, 2, 3), "Page N", "N of Total", "Page N of Total", or dash-wrapped (-1-, -2-). Set the font size, color, start number, and margin from the page edge. Use the "Skip first page" checkbox to leave cover or title pages unnumbered.
Step 4: Download
Click "Download PDF with Page Numbers". The tool uses pdf-lib to draw the page number text at the specified position on every page (or every page except the first if skip is checked). For each page, it calculates the x position based on left/center/right alignment and y based on top/middle/bottom placement. Downloads as numbered.pdf.
Starting Number and Offset
Use the starting number when this document is part of a larger set. For example, if your full report is 100 pages and this section starts at page 45, set the starting number to 45. The first numbered page will show "45", the second "46", and so on through the document.
FAQ
Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?
No — all processing happens in your browser using JavaScript. Your files are never sent anywhere. When you close the tab, everything is cleared from memory.
Can I start from a number other than 1?
Yes — set the starting number field to any value. For example, set it to 5 if this document is a continuation of a larger document that already has pages 1-4.
What formats are available for the page number?
Four formats: just the number (1, 2, 3...), 'Page 1' style, 'Page 1 of 10' showing total pages, or '1/10' fraction style. Select the format that matches your document style.
Can I choose the position of the page number?
Yes — choose between footer center, footer right, footer left, or header center. Footer center is the most common placement for professional documents.
Does the page number appear on every page?
Yes — the tool adds page numbers to all pages in the document. If you need to skip the first page (for a cover page), use the starting number field or remove the cover page before numbering, then re-merge.
