Tent Capacity Calculator

Find the right tent capacity for your group size, considering comfort vs. manufacturer ratings.

The tent capacity calculator helps you find the right tent size based on your actual group size and gear needs. Manufacturer capacity ratings are notoriously optimistic — this tool gives you the real recommendation.

Find the Right Tent Size

Choosing the Right Tent Capacity

Tent manufacturers rate capacity based on how many sleeping bags fit side by side with no space between and no gear inside. A "4-person" tent is genuinely comfortable for 2-3 people with gear. For practical comfort: buy a tent rated for 1-2 people more than your actual group size for car camping, or stay at the rating for ultralight backpacking where every ounce matters.

Vestibule Space

The vestibule (covered porch under the rain fly) is critical for wet-weather camping. For backpacking in rain, look for a tent with at least 12-15 sq ft of vestibule space per person to store wet gear and boots. Some lightweight tents sacrifice vestibule space — plan accordingly.

Weight Targets

For backpacking: 1-person tents should weigh under 2.5 lbs; 2-person under 4 lbs; 3-person under 5.5 lbs. Split the weight between hikers for group camps — one carries the body and poles, another carries the rain fly and stakes. For car camping, weight is irrelevant — prioritize livable space, weather protection, and setup ease.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tent capacity calculator free?

Yes, completely free with no signup required.

Why do tent manufacturers overstate capacity?

Manufacturer ratings measure how many sleeping bags can fit side by side in the floor area, with no gear inside and no space between sleepers. A "2-person" tent is really 1-2 people in the real world: one person with gear fits comfortably; two adults are cramped with no room for gear.

What is the recommended floor space per person?

The typical sleeping bag + person footprint is about 20x75 inches (50x190 cm). Comfort camping adds 2-3 feet of gear space per person. For backpacking, 25-30 sq ft (2.3-2.8 sq m) per person is comfortable. Car camping can budget more.

What is a vestibule and do I need one?

A vestibule is the covered porch area outside the tent door, inside the rain fly. It provides covered gear storage without taking up sleeping space. For backpacking in rain or mud, vestibule space is essentially required. For fair-weather car camping it is a nice bonus.

How heavy should a backpacking tent be?

A 1-person backpacking tent should weigh under 3 lbs (1.4 kg). A 2-person tent under 5 lbs (2.3 kg). Ultralight tents for 2 can weigh as little as 1.5 lbs. For car camping, weight does not matter — prioritize living space and weather resistance instead.
