Repellent Quick Guide

DEET
20-30% concentration. Adults: up to 6-8 hrs protection. Children 2mo+: 10-30%. Most studied, CDC recommended.
Picaridin
20% concentration. Odorless, non-greasy. Equal efficacy to DEET 20%. Safe for children 2mo+. Good for sensitive skin.
OLE/PMD
Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus or PMD (synthetic OLE). Effective natural option. NOT for children under 3 years.
IR3535
20% concentration. Mild, often used in Europe. Lower duration than DEET. Good for children, sensitive skin.
Application tips: Apply after sunscreen, not before. Reapply after swimming/sweating. Don't spray directly on face — spray hands then apply. Treat clothing with permethrin for extra protection.

How to Protect Yourself During Mosquito Season

Mosquito season timing varies dramatically by US region — Florida residents deal with mosquitoes nearly year-round, while northern Minnesota residents have a short but intense 4-5 month season. Understanding your local season timing helps you prepare outdoor activities and protect yourself and your family.

Eliminate Breeding Sites

Mosquitoes breed in standing water. Empty outdoor containers weekly — flowerpot saucers, buckets, birdbaths, clogged gutters, and tarps. Even a bottle cap of water can produce hundreds of mosquitoes in a week. Fix low spots in yards that hold water after rain.

Time Your Outdoor Activities

Most mosquito species are most active at dawn and dusk. Plan outdoor events like gardening, hiking, and sports for midday when possible during peak season. The Asian tiger mosquito (common in eastern US) is a daytime biter, so repellent is needed regardless of time.

Protect Skin and Clothing

Wear light-colored long sleeves and pants in wooded or marshy areas. Apply EPA-registered repellent to exposed skin. Treat clothing, tents, and gear with permethrin spray for long-lasting protection (effective through multiple washes). Use bed nets in high-exposure camping situations.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does mosquito season start?

Mosquito season depends on your region and climate. In southern states like Florida and Texas, mosquitoes can be active year-round. In northern states and the Midwest, season typically starts when temperatures consistently exceed 50°F (10°C), usually April-May. Peak activity is during warm, humid months — typically June through August in most of the US.

What temperature kills mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes become inactive when temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C) and cannot survive freezing temperatures. A hard freeze (28°F/-2°C for several days) kills adults but eggs can overwinter in moist soil. That is why southern states with mild winters have much longer mosquito seasons than northern states.

What is the best mosquito repellent?

The CDC recommends DEET (20-30% for adults), Picaridin (20%), IR3535, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE, not essential oil), Para-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD), or 2-undecanone. DEET 30% provides about 6-8 hours of protection. For children, use 10-30% DEET after age 2 months — avoid OLE and PMD under age 3.

When is the best time of day to avoid mosquitoes?

Most mosquito species are most active at dawn and dusk (crepuscular). Midday heat causes many species to rest in shaded areas. However, the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) bites aggressively during the day. Avoid peak outdoor activity at dawn/dusk during peak season, or use repellent.
