Understanding Guitar Tunings

Guitar tunings define which pitch each string is tuned to. Standard tuning (EADGBE) is the starting point for most guitarists, but alternate tunings open up different chord voicings, slide techniques, and tonal colors that are difficult or impossible in standard tuning.

Open Tunings

Open tunings are tuned so that strumming all strings open produces a specific major or minor chord. Open G (DGDGBD) and Open E (EBEG#BE) are favored by slide and blues players. Open D (DADF#AD) gives a rich low-end resonance popular in folk and fingerstyle. These tunings allow simple one-finger barre chords across all strings.

Drop Tunings

Drop D lowers only the 6th string by a whole step, allowing power chords on three adjacent strings with one finger. Drop C and Drop B follow the same pattern but lower the entire guitar first, then drop the low string. These are standard in heavy rock and metal where low riffing is essential.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this guitar tuner reference free?

Yes, completely free with no signup required.

What is standard guitar tuning?

Standard guitar tuning is E-A-D-G-B-E from lowest to highest string (6th to 1st). The low E is 82.41 Hz, A is 110 Hz, D is 146.83 Hz, G is 196 Hz, B is 246.94 Hz, and high E is 329.63 Hz.

What is Drop D tuning?

Drop D tuning lowers the 6th string from E (82.41 Hz) to D (73.42 Hz). The other 5 strings remain in standard tuning. This allows easy power chords on the three bass strings and is common in rock, metal, and some folk music.

What is DADGAD tuning?

DADGAD is an open tuning where strings are tuned D-A-D-G-A-D. It creates a Dsus4 chord when strummed open. Common in Celtic, folk, and acoustic fingerstyle music. Used extensively by fingerstyle players like Pierre Bensusan and Jimmy Page on Led Zeppelin's 'Kashmir'.

How do I tune to Open G?

Open G tuning is D-G-D-G-B-D. Tune the 6th string down from E to D, leave strings 5-2 in standard tuning (except string 5 stays G), and tune the 1st string down from E to D. Strummed open it produces a G major chord. Used extensively in slide guitar and by Keith Richards.
