How to Use the Lined Paper Generator

The lined paper generator creates print-ready ruled paper in any format. All settings update the preview in real time.

Choosing the Right Rule Type

College ruled is the most common format in North America, with 7.1mm line spacing — standard for students from 6th grade through university. Wide ruled (8.7mm) is better for younger students or larger handwriting. Narrow ruled (6.4mm) fits more lines per page and is favored for dense note-taking. The custom option lets you enter any spacing in millimeters.

Margin Line and Header Space

Enable the red margin line to add a vertical divider 32mm from the left edge — the standard position for the rule on American notebook paper. This margin is great for annotating, numbering questions, or adding emphasis marks. The header space adds a blank writing area at the top for name, date, subject, or page number.

Metric vs Imperial

The unit toggle switches the custom spacing input between millimeters and inches. Standard rule types show both measurements in the dropdown — college ruled at 7.1mm is 9/32 inch, wide ruled at 8.7mm is 11/32 inch. Use metric for precise international sizing, or inches if you're matching existing American paper products.

Printing Tips

For the best print quality, choose "Print PDF" and set your browser's print scale to 100% (actual size). Scaling up or down will change the physical line spacing. If printing at home, US Letter paper fits in most consumer printers; for school or office use with A4 countries, select the A4 paper size before printing.

FAQ

Is this lined paper generator free?

Yes, completely free with no signup required. Generate and print unlimited lined paper pages directly in your browser.

Is my data private?

Yes, everything runs locally in your browser. No data is uploaded or transmitted.

What is the difference between college ruled and wide ruled?

College ruled paper has lines spaced 7.1mm (9/32 inch) apart — the standard for middle school through university. Wide ruled (also called legal ruled) uses 8.7mm (11/32 inch) spacing, giving more room between lines and is common for younger students or large handwriting. Narrow ruled uses 6.4mm spacing for compact note-taking.

What is the red margin line on lined paper?

The vertical red line on the left side of lined paper is the margin line, usually placed about 32mm (1.25 inches) from the left edge. It marks where written content should start, keeping text away from the page binding and providing space for annotations or page numbers.

Can I print lined paper with a header area?

Yes, toggle on the 'Header space' option to add a blank area at the top of the page for a name, date, or subject. The header section takes up about 1.5 inches at the top before lined content begins.

What line spacing is best for printing for kids?

Wide ruled (8.7mm / 0.34 inch) is the standard for elementary school students. For handwriting practice, a custom spacing of 12-15mm gives children plenty of room. The generator's custom mode lets you set any line spacing you need.
