How to Use the Capital Cities Quiz
The Capital Cities Quiz is designed for geography students, trivia enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to improve their world capital knowledge. With three difficulty levels and continent filtering, you can focus on problem areas or challenge yourself with the full 195-country dataset.
Step 1: Choose Your Difficulty
Easy mode covers approximately 40 well-known countries — the major nations that most people encounter in news and travel: United States (Washington, D.C.), United Kingdom (London), France (Paris), Japan (Tokyo), Australia (Canberra), Brazil (Brasília). Medium adds another 60 commonly studied nations. Hard includes all 195 countries, including smaller nations like Micronesia (Palikir), Nauru (Yaren), and San Marino.
Step 2: Filter by Continent (Optional)
Select a specific continent to focus your study. African capitals are notoriously tricky — Yamoussoukro (Ivory Coast), Dodoma (Tanzania), Gitega (Burundi) — so filtering to Africa for targeted practice helps. European capitals are generally better known but still include surprises like Vaduz (Liechtenstein) and Andorra la Vella (Andorra).
Step 3: Answer Questions
Each question shows a country name and four multiple choice answers — one correct capital and three plausible distractors drawn from the same difficulty tier. Click your answer to lock it in. The timer bar at the top counts down from 15 seconds if you've enabled the timer. Answering within 5 seconds earns an extra speed bonus of 5 points.
Step 4: Review Your Results
After the final question, the results screen shows your total score, accuracy percentage, and time taken. Any questions you got wrong are listed with the correct answer so you can review and remember them for next time. Hit "Play Again" to immediately start another round with the same settings.

Is this quiz free?
Yes, the Capital Cities Quiz is completely free with no signup, no account, and no ads interrupting your quiz. Play as many rounds as you like.
Is my score saved?
Scores are shown at the end of each round with your correct/incorrect breakdown. Session scores are not persisted between page reloads by design — each visit starts fresh for focused practice.
What is the scoring system?
Each correct answer earns 10 points. Answer within 5 seconds to earn a bonus 5 points (speed bonus). Wrong answers score 0 points. Your percentage and time taken are shown on the final screen.
Can I filter by continent?
Yes, select a continent from the filter to focus your quiz on Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, or Oceania specifically. Useful for studying a particular region.
How are the wrong answer choices selected?
Wrong answers are randomly drawn from other capitals within the same difficulty tier, so the distractors are plausible. For Easy mode, the wrong answers are other well-known capitals — not obscure cities.
What is the optional timer?
The timer gives you 15 seconds to answer each question. If time runs out before you answer, the question is marked wrong. You can disable the timer in the Settings panel for untimed practice.
