How to Calculate Shower Tiles
Calculating shower tiles involves measuring all surfaces to be tiled, accounting for the tile size, and adding waste for cuts.
Measuring Your Shower
Measure the length, width, and wall height of your shower stall. For a standard 3×3 ft shower with 8 ft walls, there are three walls to tile (two 3×8 ft walls and one 3×8 ft back wall = 72 sq ft of wall area) plus a 9 sq ft floor. Enter those dimensions above and the calculator handles the rest.
Waste Allowance
Always buy extra. A 10% waste factor covers normal cuts around fixtures and edges. For diagonal patterns or complex designs, use 15%. It's better to have extras for future repairs than to run out mid-project.
Note: Estimates are for planning purposes. Verify measurements on-site before purchasing materials.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate how many shower tiles I need?
Measure the total surface area to be tiled (wall area + floor area). Divide by the tile size in the same unit. Add 10-15% for waste from cuts and breakage. This calculator does all that math for you.
How much extra tile should I buy?
Order 10% extra for straight cuts and simple patterns. Order 15% extra for diagonal patterns or subway tiles with staggered joints. This calculator adds 10% by default, which you can adjust.
What tile size is most common for showers?
3×6 subway tiles are the most popular shower wall tile. 4×4 and 4×12 tiles are also common. For floors, 2×2 mosaic sheets or 4×4 tiles work well because smaller tiles conform better to the slope.
Should I include the niche in my tile calculation?
Yes, if your shower has a niche (recessed shelf), measure those walls separately and add them to the total area. This calculator lets you add as many surfaces as needed.
Is this calculator free?
