Rug Size Calculator

Find the right rug size for any room — living room, dining room, bedroom — based on furniture layout and room dimensions

The rug size calculator recommends the ideal area rug dimensions for any room based on room type, furniture layout, and room size. Choosing the right rug size is one of the most common interior design mistakes — a rug that is too small makes a room feel disjointed, while the right size anchors the space beautifully.

How to Choose the Right Rug Size

The rug size calculator takes the guesswork out of one of interior design's most common dilemmas. The right rug ties a room together; the wrong size makes even beautiful furniture look out of place.

Living Room Rug Rules

The most popular rule is front legs on: the rug is large enough for the front legs of the sofa and accent chairs to rest on it, but the back legs float. This creates visual cohesion without requiring a giant rug. For a fully anchored look, all furniture legs should sit on the rug — choose one size larger. Leave 12-18 inches of bare floor around the perimeter.

Dining Room Rug Rules

The rug must extend at least 24 inches past the table edge on every side so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. Use this formula: table length + 48 inches = minimum rug length. A 36x72-inch table needs at minimum a 7x10 rug, ideally an 8x10 or 9x12.

Bedroom Rug Placement

For a queen or king bed, a 5x8 rug centered under the lower two-thirds of the bed is the minimum. An 8x10 is more luxurious, extending 18-24 inches on the sides and foot. Twin beds can use a 5x7 placed at the foot of the bed. The rug should feel underfoot when you get out of bed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this rug size calculator free?

Yes, completely free with no signup required. Get instant rug size recommendations for any room.

What size rug for a 12x15 living room?

For a 12x15 living room, an 8x10 rug is typically ideal. It should anchor the seating area with at least the front legs of all furniture resting on the rug. If you prefer all legs on the rug, choose a 9x12.

How big should a rug be under a dining table?

The rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond each side of the dining table so chairs remain on the rug when pushed back. For a 36x72-inch table, use a minimum 6x9 rug — an 8x10 is better and leaves comfortable clearance.

What are standard rug sizes?

Standard area rug sizes are: 2x3, 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, 5x8, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, and 10x14 (all in feet). Runner rugs are typically 2x8 or 2x12. Custom sizing is also available from many retailers.

Should the rug be bigger than the couch?

Yes. The rug should be wide enough that at least the front two legs of the sofa rest on it. Ideally all furniture legs are on the rug. A rug that is smaller than the couch makes the room feel smaller and disconnected.

How much space should be between the rug and wall?

In most rooms, leave 12-18 inches of bare floor between the rug edge and the wall. In smaller rooms or hallways, 8-12 inches is acceptable. This framing effect makes the room look intentional and polished.
