How to Calculate Grout

Grout quantity depends on tile size, joint width, tile thickness, and total area. Smaller tiles have more joints per square foot, requiring more grout. Wider joints also use significantly more grout than hairline joints.

Sanded vs Unsanded Grout

The grout joint width determines which type to use: joints under 1/8 inch need unsanded grout, which has a finer texture that doesn't scratch delicate tile surfaces. Joints 1/8 inch and wider need sanded grout, where the sand particles add compressive strength and prevent cracking.

Estimates are approximate. Always verify with your tile supplier before purchasing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much grout do I need per square foot?

Grout needs vary by tile size and joint width. Small tiles with narrow joints use more grout per square foot than large tiles. This calculator uses the standard formula based on tile dimensions, tile thickness, joint width, and grout density.

Should I use sanded or unsanded grout?

Use unsanded grout for joints under 1/8 inch — it is smoother and won't scratch polished tile surfaces. Use sanded grout for joints 1/8 inch and wider — the sand adds strength and prevents cracking in larger joints.

How much extra grout should I buy?

Buy 10% extra to account for waste, mixing inconsistencies, and future repairs. Grout batches from different lots can vary slightly in color, so buy all you need at once.

How long does mixed grout last?

Mixed grout should be used within 30-60 minutes. Do not add water to stiffening grout — it weakens the bond. Mix only what you can use in one working session.
