Understanding Plates
Standard wall framing uses one bottom plate and a double top plate (two layers of lumber at the top of the wall). This means plate lumber equals 3× the wall length in linear feet. Every door and window needs a header — a horizontal beam that carries the load that would have been carried by the interrupted studs.
