Body Roundness Index Calculator

Calculate your Body Roundness Index (BRI) — a more accurate 3D body shape health metric than BMI

Body Roundness Index (BRI) is a modern body shape metric that uses the geometry of an ellipse to quantify how "round" your body is. By combining waist circumference and height, BRI captures central adiposity more accurately than BMI, and research shows it correlates strongly with body fat percentage and metabolic health risk.

How to Use the Body Roundness Index Calculator

The Body Roundness Index (BRI) was developed to better capture body shape than BMI. The formula is derived from the mathematical equation of an ellipse applied to the human body cross-section, using waist circumference and height to estimate the "roundness" of your body.

Step 1: Measure Your Waist

Measure at the midpoint between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone (approximately at navel level). Breathe out normally and measure without pulling the tape tight or sucking in.

Step 2: Enter Your Height

Toggle between metric (cm) and imperial (feet and inches). The calculator handles unit conversion automatically.

Understanding BRI Scores

BRI ranges from about 1 (very lean) to over 15 (extreme obesity). Research shows BRI scores of 1-3 are associated with low metabolic risk, 3-6 with moderate risk, 6-13 with high risk, and above 13 with very high risk. Unlike BMI, BRI better distinguishes individuals with similar weight but different body fat distributions.

BRI vs WHtR vs BMI

All three metrics have value: BMI captures overall size, waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) is a simple abdominal fat proxy, and BRI provides a more geometric body shape assessment. Using two or more of these together gives a more complete metabolic risk picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this BRI calculator free?

Yes, completely free. No signup required, all calculations in your browser.

What is the Body Roundness Index (BRI)?

BRI is a body shape metric developed by Dr. Diana Thomas that uses waist circumference and height to estimate how 'round' the body is. Unlike BMI, BRI accounts for body shape distribution, not just weight-for-height. It correlates more strongly with body fat percentage and health risk than BMI.

What is a healthy BRI score?

BRI scores range from approximately 1 to 20. Lower scores indicate a more cylindrical body shape with less central fat. Scores of 1-3 indicate low risk, 3-6 moderate risk, and 6+ high risk. Scores above 13 are associated with extreme obesity.

What is the BRI formula?

BRI = 364.2 - 365.5 × √(1 - ((WC/2π) / (0.5 × height))²), where WC is waist circumference and height are in the same units. This formula is derived from the equation of an ellipse applied to the human body cross-section.

Is BRI better than BMI?

Research suggests BRI may be superior to BMI for predicting metabolic risk, body fat percentage, and cardiovascular disease risk because it accounts for body shape (specifically central adiposity) rather than just weight relative to height. However, BMI remains the most widely used clinical standard.

Does BRI differ by sex or ethnicity?

BRI uses the same formula for all individuals. However, as with BMI, the clinical interpretation of BRI may vary by sex and ethnicity, and reference ranges are still being refined in research settings.
