How to Use the D&D Loot Generator
The D&D Dungeon Master's Guide divides treasure into two types: individual monster treasure (what a creature carries) and treasure hoards (collected wealth in a lair or vault). This generator rolls on both table types using the DMG probability distributions.
Choosing the Right CR Range
Select the challenge rating that matches your encounter. CR 0-4 represents low-level monsters like goblins, bandits, and kobolds — they carry copper and silver with rare gemstones. CR 5-10 covers mid-tier threats like giants, trolls, and powerful humanoids — treasure includes gold and occasional magic items. CR 11-16 brings rare magic items and platinum. CR 17+ represents legendary creatures and major villains with very rare and legendary magic items.
Individual vs. Hoard Treasure
Use Individual treasure for regular monsters in random encounters or room guards — they carry personal coin with no gems or art. Use Hoard treasure for boss fights, discovered vaults, and significant milestone rewards — hoards include gems, art objects, and magic items. A dungeon might have individual loot for each room's monsters and a hoard in the final room.
Magic Item Descriptions
The generator names magic items by rarity and type. For actual item effects, consult the Dungeon Master's Guide magic item tables or choose thematically appropriate items from the listed rarity. Common items are minor effects; uncommon items are significant tools; rare and above are campaign-changing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this loot generator free to use?
Yes, completely free with no signup required. All generation happens in your browser.
What are the treasure tables based on?
The treasure tables are based on the D&D 5e Dungeon Master's Guide (DMG) Individual Treasure and Treasure Hoard tables. Challenge ratings 0-4, 5-10, 11-16, and 17+ each have different coin and magic item distributions.
What is the difference between individual and hoard treasure?
Individual treasure is what a single monster carries (typically coins only). Treasure hoards are found in a lair or chest and include gems, art objects, and magic items in addition to coins. Use hoard for boss fights and significant milestones.
How are magic item rarities determined?
Magic item rarity follows the DMG tables: common and uncommon items at lower CRs, rare and very rare at higher CRs, and legendary items only in the highest CR range. The generator rolls according to these probabilities.
Can I use this to stock a whole dungeon?
Yes. Roll multiple times for different rooms and encounters. Use individual treasure for minions and random encounters, hoard treasure for boss rooms and hidden vaults.
