How to Use the Charades Word Generator
Charades is one of the most universally loved party games, but the classic challenge is always deciding who picks the words. A charades word generator solves this by randomly selecting words with no bias — everyone faces the same fair challenge.
Step 1: Set Your Filters
Choose a category from the dropdown — Movies, TV Shows, Animals, Actions, Objects, Celebrities, Songs, Books, Food, Sports, or All Categories. Select a difficulty level: Easy for beginners and younger players, Medium for a balanced challenge, or Hard for experienced players who want a real test. The generator will only pick words that match your selections.
Step 2: Configure the Timer
Select your timer duration before starting: 30 seconds for a quick sprint, 60 seconds as the standard charades time, 90 or 120 seconds for longer rounds. The built-in countdown timer shows seconds remaining with a color-coded progress bar — green while you have time, yellow as it gets tight, and red in the final 10 seconds. Enable Sound Alert for an audio cue when time is up.
Step 3: Enable Team Mode (Optional)
Toggle Team Mode on to track scores for Team A and Team B. Each team gets +1 and -1 buttons to adjust their score after each round. This replaces scorecards and keeps the energy high.
Step 4: Start Playing
The active player presses "New Word" to reveal their charades word. Press "Start Timer" to begin the countdown. If the word is too obscure, press "Pass" — passes are tracked separately. When the round ends, score manually and press "New Word" for the next player. The word history shows the last 10 words so nobody argues about what was shown.
Adding Custom Words
Type your own words in the Custom Words section and assign a difficulty. Custom words save to your browser so they persist across sessions. Switch the Category dropdown to "Custom Words" to use only your entries — perfect for themed parties, inside jokes, or classroom use where you control the content.
Charades Rules Refresher
The actor cannot speak, mouth words, or point at objects in the room. Common charades signals: hold up fingers for word count, tug ear for "sounds like," make a circle for "the whole concept." The team scores a point if they guess correctly before time runs out.
