How to Use the Foosball Scoring Reference
Foosball has a surprisingly rich set of official rules that most recreational players have never seen. This reference covers the key rules that come up in actual play — especially the ones that cause arguments.
The Spinning Rule (Most Disputed)
The no-spinning rule is the most commonly disputed rule in recreational foosball. A legal shot requires the rod to rotate less than 360 degrees before and after contact with the ball. Full 360+ rotation (a "spin") is illegal regardless of whether the shot scores. In official competition, a spin goal is disallowed and possession is awarded to the opponent's goalie rod.
Ball In Play vs Dead Ball
The ball is live from the serve until a goal is scored or a referee (in competition) stops play. A dead ball — one that stops in an unreachable position — is put back in play by the server. In recreational play, "closest rod" is the common informal rule for dead ball restarts.
FAQ
Is this foosball reference free?
Yes, completely free with no signup required.
Is spinning legal in foosball?
No — spinning (rotating a rod more than 360 degrees before or after striking the ball) is illegal in all official foosball rules including ITSF and World Table Soccer. A spin goal does not count, and a penalty shot may be awarded to the opposing team.
How many points to win in foosball?
Standard recreational play: first to 5 goals wins a game. Match format: best of 3 or best of 5 games. ITSF tournament play uses first to 5 goals per game, best of 5 games per match.
What is the dead ball rule in foosball?
A dead ball occurs when the ball stops in a position unreachable by any figure on either team. The ball is put back in play by the serving team (or according to tournament rules) at the nearest rod.
What is the ITSF?
The ITSF (International Table Soccer Federation) is the governing body for competitive foosball/table soccer worldwide. They standardize rules, certify tables, and organize World Cup events. Tables used in ITSF events must meet specific certification requirements.
Can you play goalie in foosball?
In competitive foosball, the 1-man goalie rod is typically used in a specific defensive position. Most tournament rules require the goalie to make a reasonable attempt to defend rather than intentionally blocking with the body of the figure rather than the feet.
