An escape room puzzle generator creates a set of printable clue puzzles for home escape room games, party activities, or classroom challenges. Each puzzle encodes a word or code using a different cipher method, and solving it reveals the next clue location or final answer.
Puzzle Settings
Each word becomes the answer to one puzzle. Last answer = the final code/location.
How to Create an Escape Room Puzzle Set
A great escape room uses a clue chain: solving one puzzle reveals where to find the next clue, and the final puzzle unlocks the "treasure" (a locked box, a special envelope, or the party prize). This generator automates the cipher creation so you can focus on placing the physical clues.
Step 1: Plan Your Clue Chain
Decide on the sequence of locations in your home, classroom, or venue. For example: Bookshelf → Fireplace → Attic → Treasure chest. Each location name becomes the answer to one puzzle. The last answer should be a combination or keyword that unlocks the final prize.
Step 2: Enter Your Words and Generate
Type each answer word on a separate line in the Clue Words box, in the order players will encounter them. Select a difficulty level (Easy is best for kids ages 6-10, Medium for ages 10+, Hard for adults). Click Generate Puzzles to create your puzzle set.
Step 3: Print and Hide
Click Print Puzzles to get a clean printed set. Cut each puzzle onto a separate sheet and hide it at the location indicated by the previous puzzle's answer. The first puzzle goes in the starting area where players begin. Hide the final prize at the location named by the last answer.
Puzzle Types Explained
Caesar Cipher: Each letter is shifted by N positions in the alphabet. For example, with shift 3, A becomes D. Players decode by shifting backwards. Number Code: Each letter is replaced by its position (A=1, B=2, etc.) separated by dashes. Word Scramble: Letters are shuffled; players unscramble. Math Lock: Solve three equations to get a three-digit combination code. First Letters: The first letter of each word in a sentence spells the answer.
FAQ
Is the Escape Room Puzzle Generator free?
Yes, completely free. Generate as many puzzle sets as you want and print them out. No account or signup required.
What types of puzzles can it generate?
The generator creates Caesar cipher (letter shift) puzzles, number-to-letter substitution codes, word scrambles, math lock combinations (solve equations to get a 3-digit code), and riddles with hidden answers.
Are the puzzles solvable?
Yes. Every puzzle is generated algorithmically from your target answer, so the solution always leads back to the correct word or code. The generator also includes the answer key for each puzzle.
How do I use the answer as a clue chain?
Set each puzzle's answer to be the location of the next clue. For example, puzzle 1's answer might be BOOKSHELF, where the next clue is hidden. The final puzzle's answer is the combination to a lock box or safe.
What difficulty levels are available?
Easy: simpler ciphers (Caesar shift 1-5, straightforward scrambles). Medium: moderate shifts and multi-step codes. Hard: maximum cipher complexity and more challenging riddles.
Can I print the puzzles directly?
Yes. Click the Print button to open your browser's print dialog. The puzzles are formatted to print cleanly on letter or A4 paper, with page breaks between each puzzle.
