A resume diff compares two versions of your resume and highlights exactly what changed in each section — added content in green, removed content in red. Perfect for tracking incremental improvements, preparing for different roles, or reviewing recruiter suggestions.
Section-by-Section Diff
How to Use Resume Diff
Tracking resume changes is important when you are tailoring your resume for different roles or iterating based on recruiter feedback. Our free resume diff tool shows you exactly what changed between two resume versions, organized by section.
Step 1: Paste Both Resume Versions
Copy the text of your original resume and paste it into the left panel ("Version A"). Then paste your updated resume into the right panel ("Version B"). Use plain text for best results — copy from Word, Google Docs, or your resume editor and paste directly.
Step 2: Click Compare Resumes
The tool scans both resumes for standard section headers like Education, Experience, Skills, Summary, Projects, Certifications, Languages, and Awards. It then compares each section pair and shows what changed within that section specifically.
Step 3: Read the Section Diff
Each section shows the diff with green lines for content added in Version B and red lines for content removed from Version A. Unchanged lines appear without color. Sections that exist only in one version are flagged as "Only in A" or "Only in B" to alert you to missing or new sections.
Step 4: Check the Summary Stats
The summary panel shows how many sections were detected, total lines added, total lines removed, and the word count difference between the two versions. This gives you a quick measure of how much the resume changed overall.
Common Use Cases
Resume Diff is useful for: comparing a general resume to a role-specific tailored version, reviewing a recruiter's suggested edits before applying them, checking what changed between quarterly resume updates, and sharing a visual diff with a mentor or career coach without sending the full document.
FAQ
Is the resume diff tool free?
Yes, completely free with no account required. All comparison runs in your browser — your resume text is never sent to any server or stored anywhere.
Is my resume private when using this tool?
Yes. The diff algorithm runs entirely in client-side JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded, logged, or stored. You can safely paste sensitive career information without any privacy risk.
What is resume section detection?
The tool automatically identifies standard resume sections like Education, Experience, Skills, Summary, Projects, and Certifications by scanning for common section header keywords. It then compares each matched section individually, making it easier to see where specific changes happened.
What does the color coding mean?
Green highlighted lines with a + prefix were added in the new version. Red highlighted lines with a - prefix were removed from the original. Unchanged lines appear without any highlighting. This follows the standard diff color convention used in version control systems.
Can I compare resumes in different formats?
The tool works with plain text. If your resume is in Word or PDF format, copy and paste the text content into each panel. For best results, ensure both versions use similar formatting (same section headers) so the section detection works correctly.
How is this different from a regular text diff tool?
A regular diff compares line by line across the whole document. Resume Diff detects common resume sections and groups the diff by section, so you can see exactly which part of your resume changed — not just a list of raw line differences.
