How to Calculate Resin Vat Volume
Resin volume calculation is simple geometry: vat width × vat depth × fill height, divided by 1000 to convert mm³ to mL. The key decision is the minimum fill height needed for your specific printer and print size.
Why Fill Height Matters
During MSLA printing, each layer is exposed and the build plate lifts, causing suction forces between the print and the FEP film. As prints get taller, more resin is consumed and the level drops. Starting with adequate resin ensures the level stays above minimum throughout the entire print session. For tall prints or large cross-sections, start with 15-20mm fill height.
Resin Storage and Shelf Life
Store resin in its original bottle, in a dark location at room temperature (15-25°C). Most resins have a 12-24 month shelf life unopened. Opened bottles should be used within 6-12 months and stored away from light. Shake the bottle thoroughly before each use — resin components can separate during storage. Never mix different resin brands or types in the same vat.

How much resin do I need in the vat before printing?
Most MSLA printers require a minimum of 5-8mm depth of resin in the vat to ensure the print plate makes contact on the first layer. For a standard Elegoo Mars-size vat (130×78mm), the minimum coverage at 6mm depth is about 61mL (0.061L). Larger printers need proportionally more. Adding 20-30mm depth is common for sustained printing.
Can I pour resin back into the bottle after printing?
Yes, always pour unused resin back through a funnel filter back into its original bottle or a dark container. Resin cures when exposed to UV light — never leave resin in the vat for extended periods. The FEP film degrades faster when resin sits in the vat unused. Filter out any cured particles before storing.
What happens if the resin level is too low in the vat?
If resin is too shallow, the suction/peel force during printing may pull the part off the build plate as it separates from the FEP. Low resin also causes the print to fail when the build plate is high in the tank and the resin level falls below minimum as the print progresses. Large cross-section prints use resin faster per layer.
How much does resin cost per liter?
